I say it when zooming through a room with my arms flying up and down and feet stomping. I also say it when Deda (Daddy) tossles me about, when going down a slide, swinging, and when I jump out of the car with all of my might.

When I am really engaged, I stick my tongue out and get a really serious look, just like Deda.

Reading books is one of my favorite activites, I will read them alone or with anyone who will read with me. I often sleep with one and kiss the pages.

I can blow kisses and say, "Bye-bye, see you later!" at the appropriate times.

I am learning some simple sign language like eat, more and please. People had flocked to the lake in hoards and jet skis and boats were out and causing waves. I am a bit top heavy so traversing the uneven lake bottom made staying upright a chore for me. I thought I could just take off like I do in the wading pool. Boy, was I wrong! I don't know what those fishies are thinking, I didn't enjoy the taste of the water much at all.

15 month check-up

Weight 22lbs.12oz 25% Height 331/2in. 95%, which basically means I am tall and thin...look out Aunt Cindy and Uncle Casey!

Everytime I visit for a milestone check-up, my doctor gives me a book. Dee is the lady that cuts Daddy's hair. She has quite the following, so we waited a LONG time. Mommy ended up having to run errands and missed the whole thing, but Daddy made sure to get pictures. This took a lot of skill on Daddy's part, being that I sat on his lap to get my hair cut. Mommy showed up just in time to be sure to get some of my hair clippings. We have a hair swatch that is about 1 1/2 inches long.

My older brother Stefan followed suit a few days later and shaved his head using the home clippers. His hair is about 3/4in long all over. WOW...had a long shag haircut! Mommy saved 3 or more inches in a snack baggie. He said he wanted to be cooler for the summer. I think he enjoys looking like me. ;)wink

2nd Easter

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #006600; During their conversation Mommy noticed how quiet the house seemed. She decided that it was a good idea to go check it out. Upon entering the kitchen, she saw Bailey wrangling cereal and a baggie for her breakfast on the go. Mommy asked Bailey where I was, to which she replied; “He’s right there,” looking down at the floor. However, I was not right there. I had plans of my own. Mommy headed into the foyer with Bailey at her heals. Mommy peeked into the laundry room on her way through the foyer. There was no sign of me! She began calling my name. No answer! Mommy continued up the stairs calling my name and scanning the family room for me, or evidence that I had been in the room. The light from Daddy’s office was casting my shadow into the hallway, the sound of my hands and knees slapping the floor could be heard coming closer and I was answering; “wha, wha, wha”. When I saw Mommy’s face, I squealed with delight. She lifted me from the floor and I hugged her neck tightly. Leaning around Mommy I called; “Da, Da, Da,” to Daddy who was standing on the landing looking farely dismayed. I excitedly told him, “kuuu”, which means that I was just trying to access OUR computer!

&nbsp

repeat performance

Again, I slept from 9:30pm – 4:30am and this time my parents seized the moment and got some needed rest. It is a time spent in laughter and with peaceful spirits. I received special attention from the owner who danced me around the dinning room. This is my first year in attendance outside the womb. If you go back to the December 2004 blog, you will notice that last year I was dressed up like a snowglobe; well at least Mommy's belly was.

Been Busy...Here's An Update

With Daddy in school and routine maintenance of life within a family, wee have gotten a bit behind on posting, even so, all is well.

Let's see. What significant changes are going on in my life? I have four teeth now and more are on their way. Mommy noticed two breaking through the surface of my gums today. I have been pulling up and trying to walk, so I keep trading bruises for bumps and scrapes. I am resilient and overall happy.

I got a bad case of sinusitis and was treated with three rounds of antibiotics. Though I went through a rough period, two weeks before Thanksgiving, I was blessed with a visit from my Grammie Gardner. She cared for me the entire time, so that my parents could continue with work and school. We are all very thankful for her self-lessness and sacrifice. During her visit, we became quite close and developed our routine of daily walkies and nappies. Mommy and Daddy have a hard time getting me to nap, but Grammie figured out what I liked. I slept with a teddy pillow and the same warm snuggly blanket everyday. It was like having a real British Nanny, but with the perks of a Grammie.

Over the river and through the woods...
Our family went to visit Grammie and Grampie Gardner during the Thanksgiving holiday. The food was delicious. I was treated like royalty; as were my sibiings and cousins as well. The gathering of family was a blessing.

Grammie and Grampie had a funny gift swap while we were eating Thanksgiving dinner and I ended up with a "bow-hawk"...Daddy's sense of humor.

Nine Months & Eleven days

11/21/05 well check
weight 19#8oz 25%
height 30in 100%

Mommy and Daddy were a bit concerned that I was on the thin side, but were reassured that I appear to be healthy.

Six Month Check-UP

weighting

Daddy took me to my 6mth check-up. Mommy didn't even cry... I guess she did enough of that last week.

Daddy was anxious this morning. Unfortunately, he had class, so he didn't get to come with us. Mommy was also anxious about dropping me off. Piper was very excited for me. She really enjoys her school, so she talked to me along the way and reassured me that there was going to be fun stuff to do today. Piper was proud to be my big sister. When I arrived, I was mused by the crying baby next to me. It reminded Mommy of her first day in Kindergarten. She too, wondered why everyone was crying. Piper got me out of my carseat and I reached over to the little girl. She stopped crying.

Piper helped me feel safe.

Hey, I can bounce here, too!

Weeeeeee!

My Florida Grandma's First Visit

Grandma and I had a blast! I can't wait to see her again. I have been looking around the house for her, but can't seem to find her. When Mommy noticed that my grunts had an unusual tone, she realized that I missed Grandma, so she sat in the rocker and sang to me like Grandma did while she was here. I was surprised to look up and see that it was Mommy singing to me and not Grandma. It was not quite the same, so Mommy called Grandma to get the words to the song:

Grandma's tiny baby boy
loves to play with cars, trucks, and toys
and I hope he will always know
this is why I love him so...
la, la-la, doo da da, da do da day
(something like that...Mommy's memory is not so great! lol)

July 24th -31st

Jaws

Piper got three new pairs googles for swim class and decided to share with Harrison. I smiled and coo-ed most of the day. Stefan, Bailey, Piper and Mommy thought that the mist machines located under the vine trellis by the gorilla habitat provided a refreshing end to a pleasant day.

6/17/2005

4 Month Check-up

Despite fact that vaccinations are a pain, I have great news! I liked the softer music, but the clapping was a bit disturbing. Actually, I had my mind on eating and going to sleep, or trying to stay that way through most of the performance. So, when I objected to the noise Daddy took me out into the lobby. Shortly after that, Mommy took me to the ladies' room to nurse. I think that was my favorite part of the night...well, that and the going home part.
When we got home, everyone ate pizza while I had squash and salivated with a longing stare at their plates. When I reached for Mommy's plate, I was promised that when I get teeth I will get some pizza, too! Piper decided after dinner that she would like to hold me. I like to cuddle and so that was just fine by me. Mommy thinks we are cute so she took our picture. We are both hams.

Christian huggins

Harrison' s Baptism

5/08/2005

All of my brothers and sisters, my mommy and daddy, my godmother Lois, my family's friend Nicole and Grampie Gardner (who actually took this picture) attended the ceremony. It has been a busy month. Our family moved into a more spacious home over Spring Break and Internet access has been limited, which is the reason that posts have decreased. Hopefully, we will be able to update the blog more regularly, as we settle into our routines.

Harrison is growing rapidly. He looks more like a three month old than a child who is little over a month old. He has decided that the ceiling fan in Mommy’s and Daddy's room is just the coolest. His ability to watch it spin around is right up there with having his diapie changed and is almost certain to produce a smile. Mommy's time at home with Harrison is nearing an end and soon Daddy will take off for paternity leave. It should prove to be an interesting time, as Harrison has begun to show definite signs of mommyitis. Daddy has found that swaddling him snuggly and giving him a pacifier works wonders. Washing his hair and brushing it also helps with fussy times.

If you have any other suggestions for calming a baby who is longing to nurse an absent mommy, please feel free to post. I'm sorry for taking so long to get to posting, but as you know, it has been one wild ride. First, I'm sorry if I didn't contact everyone earlier. This is my first break in the flurry of activity since leaving the house more than twelve hours ago.

Welcome to Harrison Cubby Gardner! Born at 12:03 pm today. 7 pounds, 0 ounces, 19 3/4 inches, Baby and Mom are doing great. As you know, we were admitted for induction, but once Jennifer's membrane was ruptured the birth process shifted into warp speed -- 4cm to delivery in 13 minutes! I'm still shocked and amazed at Jennifer’s performance. There was no time for any pain meds. She handled it with the utmost grace and resilience. Although the hospital staff was incredibly busy, their handling of our case was outstanding! They were extremely sharp, professional and courteous. Kudos to them as well.

No time to upload pictures now, I have to study for an exam. I'll post some soon. Excuse me doc, but I thought you said that February 12th was the due date. Isn’t that less than two weeks? When your waistline has reached 45 inches, two days makes a big difference! I guess we can disregard the count down on the right side of the blog.

So when will he get here? Your guess is as good as mine. As life has a way of producing humor that we can only learn to appreciate later in life; pick the seemly most inconvenient date and that will be the day. We are expecting snow this evening. I was thinking this morning that snowy weather would be prime delivery weather; after all, Christian was delivered on a snowy day in May! However, there’s NO change in dilation. Let’s see, Cubby has labs on Friday; that may be the day. Dr. McDonald will be out of town this weekend, so the odds for a birth this weekend increase exponentially. Of course, the fact that Grandparents are due in next week and their visit ends on the 13th insures that we will be having a Valentine’s Day baby after all, as Bailey once predicted.

If a raging sinus infection doesn’t add to the stress caused by uncertainty of arrival, perhaps the completely flat tire that I drove home on, in the chilly rain, while accompanied by an irritable four year old, is the perfect icing on the day.

Okay, I am finding my center. Having had the opportunity to hear the baby’s heart and knowing that while I am seeking to place myself under undue stress, our baby is doing fine and all other vital signs are wonderful is my greatest calming influence of the day. I also owe thanks to Cubby, who after silently listening to me vent, said that everything would be okay.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://weegardner.blogspot.com/2005/02/can-we-hang-in-there-two-more-weeks.html' title='Can we hang in there two more weeks? His heart beat is normal. My blood pressure was up a bit for me, but normal by average standards. All other vitals looked fine. Dilation is measuring between 1 and 2. As you might expect, I'm starting to get a little uncomfortable.
Cub: The baby just keeps drooping a little lower each day. It's like waiting for the New Year in really slow motion.
Jen: Speaking of "Where's your head at"...If you have seen Cubby lately, you will have noticed a change in hair trends. Over the winter break we watched a full faced beard grow in,

which has recently diminished to a goatee. Did this chain of events precipitate a dream sequence?
Last night, the baby was born weighing 5lbs and measuring 14inches...,now I know I'm dreaming; the belly says he has far surpassed that size.
Anyway, in the dream...The baby was sitting on my lap in a diaper. He had these long shiny, dark brown, reddish tinted, 1/2inch long hairs growing on his legs and he was rubbing them. Cubby came over to talk to him and I mentioned how much Cubby and the baby looked like each other. At that point, the baby said," see, look at my hairs, Daddy!" I then looked at Cubby said,"I told you he would be hairy." It was a very matter of a fact dream conversation, but at this point, you may be laughing along with me.

A gift from co-workers

I think that there are seven of us at work that are pregnant or have been pregnant this year. So, my co-workers decided to give out gift cards this year, as a solution to the baby boom we've experienced. We had our shower on Thursday afternoon. Whoa-hoo, my gift card was for Target.

Shopping was great fun. I picked up Piper after school, on Friday afternoon and we went shopping before going home. As we walked into the baby zone, Piper said that she wanted to buy him (the baby) everything! She really felt important, so much so that she became a bit bossy, though still tolerable. Most of the things in this picture were selections she made during our excursion. She picked the colors and styles she wanted for everything. The two bibs she chose state, "I love my big sister" and "I love my big brother". I think the bibs were her favorite purchases. She giggled wildly when I read them to her.

A big thank you goes out to those who made the trip possible. The experience made a difference in the life a little girl who is adjusting to the thought of another person sharing the limelight.

purchased with Target gift certificate

Baby Pool

With about 30 days left to go until the baby arrives, I thought it was time to post the pool to collect everyone's guesses about weight, date, time, etc. Click on the title to be taken to the survey. Lately, He seems to be concerned about the pain. He comments that he is glad that he is a guy and can not carry children and he feels for women. He is continually stating that it is amazing that the belly gets so big.

Stefan still seems to be a bit reluctant, though he has reached out to feel my stomach without prompting a few times in the last few weeks. He was actually able to grasp a little foot the other day and I think he found it to be pretty amazing.

Bailey has been very grown-up about the whole experience. She likes having siblings. She and Piper are very close. I believe that she will also form a wonderful bond with her newest sibling, even though hasn't expressed an interest in touching or talking to my belly.

Piper is very excited about the coming of the baby. She has been snuggling my belly a lot while singing and talking to her brother. She giggles when she sees him move and tries to catch his little feet. I have begun preparing her through conversation for the birthday. I hope to head off any fears she might have about hospital stay for me and the baby. I am hoping for a short one, so that our family can be reunited quickly. Piper has slept away from home only about three times in her life. Generally, she has a billion comments and or questions for every new experience. I hate that I will not be the one to comfort her through the wait and to answer her questions.

34 Weeks

We had a check up on December 28th. We gather with Lois's family during the Christmas season for Chinese buffet style dinner. It dates back to a true turn of events when a Chinese restaurant was the only establishment open for business for us during the holiday season. We laughed about it being like "The Christmas Story" and vowed to keep the tradition alive. Though our families have changed over the years and the restaurant has too, we have kept up the tradition of gathering for a Chinese buffet during the holiday.

Holiday Tradition
Posted by Hello

Do Babies Dream?

According to this article I found at birthpsychology.com. Life Before Birth; The Fetal Senses by David B. Chamberlain, Ph.D.

...researchers have discovered that babies are dreaming as early as 23 weeks g.a.when rapid eye movement sleep is first observed (Birnholz, 1981). Studies of premature babies have revealed intense dreaming activity, occupying 100% of sleep time at 30 weeks g.a., and gradually diminishing to around 50% by term. Dreaming is a vigorous activity involving apparently coherent movements of the face and extremities in synchrony with the dream itself, manifested in markedly pleasant or unpleasant expressions. Dreaming is also an endogenous activity, neither reactive or evoked, expressing inner mental or emotional conditions. Observers say babies behave like adults do when they are dreaming (Roffwarg, Muzio, and Dement 1966) Click on the title of this post to view the rest of the article.

I wonder what they dream about. Those outside the womb tend to dream about things for which there is a frame of reference. Are their dreams of light and sound or do they actually get images? If they do get images; what are those images?

<link rel='related' href='http://www.birthpsychology.com/lifebefore/fetalsense.html' title='Do Babies Dream? I was in and out in a flash. The baby's heart sounded great and my belly is growing, as it should. My iron and blood sugar tests had wonderful results. We are still on schedule and our next appointment is December 28th.

The best part of the visit occurred when Dr. McDonald told to me that he and his wife are expecting their fourth child. She is nineteen weeks along. He seems proud. We spoke briefly about how parenting takes precedence over a career. It was nice to hear his point of view; it seemed genuine. There he was dressed in scrubs, apparently fresh in from the near by hospital and he had an expression on his face that beamed through his costume to reveal the dad role that he would rather be experiencing at the moment.

I remember thinking; God has a way of putting us in great hands.

Too Early for Nesting ???

Tonight, I found a site that states that nesting can begin as early as five months into the pregnancy. Click on the title of this link to read it for yourself. I had always heard that nesting didn't begin until late in pregnancy and this belief was confirmed by the birth of my first born, son. I began cleaning out closets the night that I went into labor. The apartment had been spotless up until that point and I had gotten the sudden urge to clean out boxes that were being stored in the closet. He was born four hours from the onset of labor. Needless to say, boxes were all over the livingroom when I returned with my beautiful baby boy in my arms.

Currently, I am often asked how much further I have to go and my response is met with a look of surprise or shock; it is hard to tell which. I feel big and everyone thinks I look big. I had to go back to photos of my previous pregnancy to confirm in my own mind that, I just get big and that's that. The fourth time around at age 35 is a lot different in many ways than at 18, 19 and even 31.

The strangest thing happened last night. I couldn't sleep so; I got up and ate two bowls of Sugar Smacks. I have never been one for mid-night snacking; generally I am enjoying the movie on the back of my eye-lids too much to even stir until the light begins to peer through the blinds, or that alarm clock makes a nuisance of itself, as it is scheduled to do every morning before dawn. After I wolfed down those bowls of cereal, I cleaned the kitchen. I also had an urge to rearrange the house, but was afraid that I would wake everyone, except the dog, who starred at me like I was disturbing her until I gave her two dog biscuits through her crate and scruffled her head. I finally returned to bed at about 3:30am only to be awaken again at 5:30. At least it wasn't cold or rainy when I pulled away from the drive this morning to start my whirl-wind day of dropping off kids followed by greeting more kids with my painted on smile and puffy eyes.

Upon returning home today, the nesting syndrome continued. Cubby Hubby had class and the boys were hanging Christmas lights at a friend’s house. It is funny how kids don't mind helping out at other people's houses. So, I pushed, shoved and scooted furniture until the dinning room and living room were totally rearranged and all cracks and crevasses were thoroughly swept. Our four year old daughter was extremely excited by the whole process and was underfoot "helping" all the way. We even managed to move our fully- decorated 6.5ft tree by ourselves to a table top. I just hope that when the guys return home they don't trip literally and figuratively; not to mention what my step-daughter will think when she returns at the end of the week.

Anyway, I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. It will be nice to talk to Dr. McDonald and have a confirmation that all things are on schedule and as they have been anticipated.

Pregnant Dads

10 Tips for New Dads

1.	Remember that babies aren't really breakable. Don't be afraid to hold yours! Ask someone who is around to show you some great holds for little ones whether it be a midwife, doctor, nurse, doula, mom, relative, friend, etc.
2.	If you are feeling left out talk to your partner about it. Chances are it's not on purpose.
3.	New moms often have emotional ups and downs that are not predictable. Be supportive and offer an ear when possible. Learn the warning signs of postpartum depression and seek help if the situation is heading out of control.
4.	Support her with breastfeeding. Tell her that you're proud of her and protect her from well meaning but negative comments about breastfeeding. Take a breastfeeding class during the prenatal period if possible.
5.	Help with the other children or household. Remind mom to let the house go and to focus on her recovery and the new baby.
6.	New dads can also experience the blues or postpartum depression. Much in your life has changed and it’s important to realize this and get help if you need it as well.
7.	Remember that the only thing you can't do is breastfeed. You can change diapers, soothe a crying baby, carry the baby, play with the baby, anything the baby needs done.
8.	If you need help ask for it. Know who to call in your area for help and support whether it be a doctor or midwife, a postpartum doula, lactation consultant, or the local babysitter.
9.	Mom is going to need extra sleep and care while her body recovers. Get up with the baby when you can. Bring the baby to her in the middle of the night if possible. If you must go back to work check in with her during the day. Perhaps surprise her with some healthy take out food or fresh flowers.
10.	Remember that adding a new baby to the mix is always going to stir your life up a bit, even if it's not your first baby. Learning to live with another human being takes time. Give yourself a break if you need it as well.

-pregnancy.about.com

Click on the title of this post get the dad's side of pregnancy and other interesting tidbits.

Count Down...10 weeks

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #000000; He's kicking and his little heart is beating like a rhythmic drum. I took the hour long glucose test. Dr. McDonald was surprised that this is my fourth pregnancy and yet, this is my first time to take the test. The muted Fanta drink wasn't so bad. I had heard the horror stories, so I was actually expecting it to be more like slightly carbonated metamucil. The heartburn that followed was the biggest bummer (as Piper says). I won't get the results until the next visit, unless something unusual comes up. Our next visit is in three weeks.

In the meantime, I found an awesome site for creating a personalized birth plan. It is used for communicating your ideas for the ideal birth process with your healthcare provider. Of course, one must remember that not every wish is a command. However, I have learned in these thirty-five years, that if you don't make your wishes known, they can not come to fruition!

Click on the title of this post if you want to check out the site.

Sibling News

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #000000; However, a few family members and close friends have been asking us about items we will need for the new baby. Fortunately, my very generous friend, Nicole, has a baby boy that is about fifteen months old now and she has offered to loan some of his things to our baby. Today, she asked about giving us a shower. Because I believe that our friends and relatives are excited along with us, even if they wouldn't choose such a large family for themselves, I have decided to accept her offer.

According to babbee.com... "Traditionally, yes a baby shower is only held for first baby's but the modern view is that baby showers can be held for subsequent babies. It might be a good idea if the person who is intending to host the shower asks the potential guests how they feel about holding a second or third shower. If most people seem keen with the idea then why not have one. Gifts for the shower are best aimed at being the more useful everyday items that the baby may need and maybe not quite as expensive as given at a first baby shower. If the second or third baby is a different sex from the original one, or if there has been a considerable lapse in time between the births the mother may not still have the original clothing and equipment it may be particularly appropriate to hold a subsequent shower. But please do remember that the idea of holding a baby shower is of course not just about giving gifts but is also a social event and it is a good excuse for friends and family to get together and to celebrate the birth of a baby."

I found the above quote when I did a google search for baby shower etiquette. Also, I found some really neat sites that offered alternative ideas to the whole gift giving pressure that showers often impose. Click on the title of this post to view one of those sites. The theme was storybook characters. There was only one pregnant story book character that I could think of, so the baby and I got to be the Kevin Henkes Character: Delphinium Twinkle, from Chrysanthemum. It is a very cute story with a character building moral. I have read it to children of all ages, including ones in middle school. Boys and girls both seem to be engaged throughout the reading and able to connect to the story. If you have seen the movie, Mean Girls, then this is the G rated version.

Posted by Hello

24 Weeks

The unborn child is covered with a fine, downy hair called lanugo. Its tender skin is protected by a waxy substance called vernix. Some of this substance may still be on the child's skin at birth at which time it will be quickly absorbed. The child practices breathing by inhaling amnionic fluid into developing lungs.
Source

•	The little one may put on as much as 6 ounces this week. That is 1/3 of his total body weight. That is comparable to a 130 lb. woman gaining 43 pounds in one week!
•	The lungs are gaining blood vessels now, preparing them for taking over the task of getting oxygen into the blood stream.
•	Baby is working out his own waking and sleeping periods, and they won't always coincide with mom's. That explains the tap dance routine at 2 am.
•	Unborn babies respond to music.
Source

Our baby boy seems to be right on schedule. His tap dance begins around 2:00 pm with the introduction which gradually climbs to full force by 5:00pm and tapers off around 8:00pm. The encore performance begins around 10:00pm and continues until whenever early am. I have learned to sleep through it, unless of course the dance is on my bladder and then wee are both up.
I visited Dr. McDonald again yesterday. Baby's heartbeat is strong and wee have gained yet another 8lbs. Cutting back on the snicker bars and carbs, eating more protein and walking more has been recommended. I didn't offer the snicker bar thing; it was his word choice. I was careful not to correct him by revealing that Taco Bell Burrito Supremes are our weekness. Wee don't plan to give them up!!! I have already worked out. I will use a spoon to scoop out the middle and toss the torilla. That will eliminate some of the carbs, right.
