Siblings

Christian surprisingly patted my belly the other day and said that he couldn't wait to see his little brother. Lately, He seems to be concerned about the pain. He comments that he is glad that he is a guy and can not carry children and he feels for women. He is continually stating that it is amazing that the belly gets so big.

Stefan still seems to be a bit reluctant, though he has reached out to feel my stomach without prompting a few times in the last few weeks. He was actually able to grasp a little foot the other day and I think he found it to be pretty amazing.

Bailey has been very grown-up about the whole experience. She likes having siblings. She and Piper are very close. I believe that she will also form a wonderful bond with her newest sibling, even though hasn't expressed an interest in touching or talking to my belly.

Piper is very excited about the coming of the baby. She has been snuggling my belly a lot while singing and talking to her brother. She giggles when she sees him move and tries to catch his little feet. I have begun preparing her through conversation for the birthday. I hope to head off any fears she might have about hospital stay for me and the baby. I am hoping for a short one, so that our family can be reunited quickly. Piper has slept away from home only about three times in her life. Generally, she has a billion comments and or questions for every new experience. I hate that I will not be the one to comfort her through the wait and to answer her questions.

34 Weeks

We had a check up on December 28th. Vital signs are wonderful and he appears to have his head in the downward position. We go back in two weeks for another check-up. We will see the doctor every two weeks for a a while now.

We woke to an unexpected snow day. All of the kids, including the grown and unborn joined in the fun of snow angels, snowball fights and snowman building.

Holiday Spirit Shirt

Okay, Christmas is not traditionally a costuming holiday, but this was just too cute an idea to pass up. Notice any similarities here? Inspired by the great holiday novelty, the snow globe, we just had to make this shirt. Jen wore this shirt the last day of school before the Christmas break. This was a fun project.

Christmas at Golden China

This has been a tradition for our family for years. We gather with Lois's family during the Christmas season for Chinese buffet style dinner. It dates back to a true turn of events when a Chinese restaurant was the only establishment open for business for us during the holiday season. We laughed about it being like "The Christmas Story" and vowed to keep the tradition alive. Though our families have changed over the years and the restaurant has too, we have kept up the tradition of gathering for a Chinese buffet during the holiday.

Do Babies Dream?

According to this article I found at birthpsychology.com. Life Before Birth; The Fetal Senses by David B. Chamberlain, Ph.D.
...researchers have discovered that babies are dreaming as early as 23 weeks g.a.when rapid eye movement sleep is first observed (Birnholz, 1981). Studies of premature babies have revealed intense dreaming activity, occupying 100% of sleep time at 30 weeks g.a., and gradually diminishing to around 50% by term. Dreaming is a vigorous activity involving apparently coherent movements of the face and extremities in synchrony with the dream itself, manifested in markedly pleasant or unpleasant expressions. Dreaming is also an endogenous activity, neither reactive or evoked, expressing inner mental or emotional conditions. Observers say babies behave like adults do when they are dreaming (Roffwarg, Muzio, and Dement 1966) Click on the title of this post to view the rest of the article.

I wonder what they dream about. Those outside the womb tend to dream about things for which there is a frame of reference. Are their dreams of light and sound or do they actually get images? If they do get images; what are those images?

31 weeks

The doctor's appointment went well. I was in and out in a flash. The baby's heart sounded great and my belly is growing, as it should. My iron and blood sugar tests had wonderful results. We are still on schedule and our next appointment is December 28th.

The best part of the visit occurred when Dr. McDonald told to me that he and his wife are expecting their fourth child. She is nineteen weeks along. He seems proud. We spoke briefly about how parenting takes precedence over a career. It was nice to hear his point of view; it seemed genuine. There he was dressed in scrubs, apparently fresh in from the near by hospital and he had an expression on his face that beamed through his costume to reveal the dad role that he would rather be experiencing at the moment.

I remember thinking; God has a way of putting us in great hands.

Too Early for Nesting ???

Tonight, I found a site that states that nesting can begin as early as five months into the pregnancy. Click on the title of this link to read it for yourself. I had always heard that nesting didn't begin until late in pregnancy and this belief was confirmed by the birth of my first born, son. I began cleaning out closets the night that I went into labor. The apartment had been spotless up until that point and I had gotten the sudden urge to clean out boxes that were being stored in the closet. He was born four hours from the onset of labor. Needless to say, boxes were all over the livingroom when I returned with my beautiful baby boy in my arms.

Currently, I am often asked how much further I have to go and my response is met with a look of surprise or shock; it is hard to tell which. I feel big and everyone thinks I look big. I had to go back to photos of my previous pregnancy to confirm in my own mind that, I just get big and that's that. The fourth time around at age 35 is a lot different in many ways than at 18, 19 and even 31.

The strangest thing happened last night. I couldn't sleep so; I got up and ate two bowls of Sugar Smacks. I have never been one for mid-night snacking; generally I am enjoying the movie on the back of my eye-lids too much to even stir until the light begins to peer through the blinds, or that alarm clock makes a nuisance of itself, as it is scheduled to do every morning before dawn. After I wolfed down those bowls of cereal, I cleaned the kitchen. I also had an urge to rearrange the house, but was afraid that I would wake everyone, except the dog, who starred at me like I was disturbing her until I gave her two dog biscuits through her crate and scruffled her head. I finally returned to bed at about 3:30am only to be awaken again at 5:30. At least it wasn't cold or rainy when I pulled away from the drive this morning to start my whirl-wind day of dropping off kids followed by greeting more kids with my painted on smile and puffy eyes.

Upon returning home today, the nesting syndrome continued. Cubby Hubby had class and the boys were hanging Christmas lights at a friend’s house. It is funny how kids don't mind helping out at other people's houses. So, I pushed, shoved and scooted furniture until the dinning room and living room were totally rearranged and all cracks and crevasses were thoroughly swept. Our four year old daughter was extremely excited by the whole process and was underfoot "helping" all the way. We even managed to move our fully- decorated 6.5ft tree by ourselves to a table top. I just hope that when the guys return home they don't trip literally and figuratively; not to mention what my step-daughter will think when she returns at the end of the week.

Anyway, I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow. It will be nice to talk to Dr. McDonald and have a confirmation that all things are on schedule and as they have been anticipated.

Pregnant Dads

10 Tips for New Dads
1. Remember that babies aren't really breakable. Don't be afraid to hold yours! Ask someone who is around to show you some great holds for little ones whether it be a midwife, doctor, nurse, doula, mom, relative, friend, etc.
2. If you are feeling left out talk to your partner about it. Chances are it's not on purpose.
3. New moms often have emotional ups and downs that are not predictable. Be supportive and offer an ear when possible. Learn the warning signs of postpartum depression and seek help if the situation is heading out of control.
4. Support her with breastfeeding. Tell her that you're proud of her and protect her from well meaning but negative comments about breastfeeding. Take a breastfeeding class during the prenatal period if possible.
5. Help with the other children or household. Remind mom to let the house go and to focus on her recovery and the new baby.
6. New dads can also experience the blues or postpartum depression. Much in your life has changed and it’s important to realize this and get help if you need it as well.
7. Remember that the only thing you can't do is breastfeed. You can change diapers, soothe a crying baby, carry the baby, play with the baby, anything the baby needs done.
8. If you need help ask for it. Know who to call in your area for help and support whether it be a doctor or midwife, a postpartum doula, lactation consultant, or the local babysitter.
9. Mom is going to need extra sleep and care while her body recovers. Get up with the baby when you can. Bring the baby to her in the middle of the night if possible. If you must go back to work check in with her during the day. Perhaps surprise her with some healthy take out food or fresh flowers.
10. Remember that adding a new baby to the mix is always going to stir your life up a bit, even if it's not your first baby. Learning to live with another human being takes time. Give yourself a break if you need it as well.

Doctor's Visit @ 28 weeks

Everything is great! He's kicking and his little heart is beating like a rhythmic drum. I took the hour long glucose test. Dr. McDonald was surprised that this is my fourth pregnancy and yet, this is my first time to take the test. The muted Fanta drink wasn't so bad. I had heard the horror stories, so I was actually expecting it to be more like slightly carbonated metamucil. The heartburn that followed was the biggest bummer (as Piper says). I won't get the results until the next visit, unless something unusual comes up. Our next visit is in three weeks.

In the meantime, I found an awesome site for creating a personalized birth plan. It is used for communicating your ideas for the ideal birth process with your healthcare provider. Of course, one must remember that not every wish is a command. However, I have learned in these thirty-five years, that if you don't make your wishes known, they can not come to fruition!

Showers for the second, third, fourth or...fifth baby?

Originally, my husband and I decided that it would not be proper etiquette to have a shower, given that this will be the fifth addition to our family. However, a few family members and close friends have been asking us about items we will need for the new baby. Fortunately, my very generous friend, Nicole, has a baby boy that is about fifteen months old now and she has offered to loan some of his things to our baby. Today, she asked about giving us a shower. Because I believe that our friends and relatives are excited along with us, even if they wouldn't choose such a large family for themselves, I have decided to accept her offer.

According to babbee.com... "Traditionally, yes a baby shower is only held for first baby's but the modern view is that baby showers can be held for subsequent babies. It might be a good idea if the person who is intending to host the shower asks the potential guests how they feel about holding a second or third shower. If most people seem keen with the idea then why not have one. Gifts for the shower are best aimed at being the more useful everyday items that the baby may need and maybe not quite as expensive as given at a first baby shower. If the second or third baby is a different sex from the original one, or if there has been a considerable lapse in time between the births the mother may not still have the original clothing and equipment it may be particularly appropriate to hold a subsequent shower. But please do remember that the idea of holding a baby shower is of course not just about giving gifts but is also a social event and it is a good excuse for friends and family to get together and to celebrate the birth of a baby."

I found the above quote when I did a google search for baby shower etiquette. Also, I found some really neat sites that offered alternative ideas to the whole gift giving pressure that showers often impose. Click on the title of this post to view one of those sites.

If a fifth baby celebration sounds like something you would like to attend, please email us and I will forward your contact information to our gracious host. Thanks

Exercising the senses...

Exploring a Small, Shaded World
By Rita Mullin

Even before his eyes open at 26 weeks, the child is sensitive to dark and light.

The eyelids remain closed until about week 26, when the parts of the eye are fully formed and the brain is prepared to receive visual signals. Even before the eyelids open, however, the baby is sensitive to changes in light, his heart beating faster when a bright light is focused on his mother's abdomen...

Inside Out

This is Jennifer's costume for "Inside Out Day" at her school. We made the T-shirt with a sonogram picture on it. It also includes (as a joke) answers to the most frequently asked questions (FAQ's) Jennifer gets from people. Since it's tough to read from the picture, I'll post them here too. What makes it funny is trying to imagine the questions.
A: February 10th or 12th
A: No, it's a boy.
A: Yes, I'm sure there's only one.
A: How do I look like I feel?
A: No, not unless you're a licensed obstetrician.

Prenatal Costume

Our school was having dress-up day for the fall carnival. The theme was storybook characters. There was only one pregnant story book character that I could think of, so the baby and I got to be the Kevin Henkes Character: Delphinium Twinkle, from Chrysanthemum. It is a very cute story with a character building moral. I have read it to children of all ages, including ones in middle school. Boys and girls both seem to be engaged throughout the reading and able to connect to the story. If you have seen the movie, Mean Girls, then this is the G rated version.

24 Weeks

The unborn child is covered with a fine, downy hair called lanugo. Its tender skin is protected by a waxy substance called vernix. Some of this substance may still be on the child's skin at birth at which time it will be quickly absorbed. The child practices breathing by inhaling amnionic fluid into developing lungs.
Source

• The little one may put on as much as 6 ounces this week. That is 1/3 of his total body weight. That is comparable to a 130 lb. woman gaining 43 pounds in one week!
• The lungs are gaining blood vessels now, preparing them for taking over the task of getting oxygen into the blood stream.
• Baby is working out his own waking and sleeping periods, and they won't always coincide with mom's. That explains the tap dance routine at 2 am.
• Unborn babies respond to music.
Source

Our baby boy seems to be right on schedule. His tap dance begins around 2:00 pm with the introduction which gradually climbs to full force by 5:00pm and tapers off around 8:00pm. The encore performance begins around 10:00pm and continues until whenever early am. I have learned to sleep through it, unless of course the dance is on my bladder and then wee are both up.
I visited Dr. McDonald again yesterday. Baby's heartbeat is strong and wee have gained yet another 8lbs. Cutting back on the snicker bars and carbs, eating more protein and walking more has been recommended. I didn't offer the snicker bar thing; it was his word choice. I was careful not to correct him by revealing that Taco Bell Burrito Supremes are our weekness. Wee don't plan to give them up!!! I have already worked out. I will use a spoon to scoop out the middle and toss the torilla. That will eliminate some of the carbs, right. LOL

October 5th Sibling Responses

Piper was the first to hear the news. She had been ill and had a doctor’s appointment that morning, so she ended up going to the sonogram appointment with us. She was so sure that she was going to get a baby sister to share clothes and shoes with that she started referring to the baby as her baby sister. A few days before the sonogram, I started to prepare her for the possibility of a baby brother. She protested at first and then agreed that we needed to be happy with what we get and glad that the baby is healthy. As we entered the doctor’s office, I had a brief conversation with her reminding her of this point. She replied; “I know we have to be happy..., but I know it is my baby sister”. When the sonogram specialist announced that we had a baby boy, she kissed my tummy and looked up at the woman and said, “It’s my baby sister!” The specialist was nice and tolerant of Piper’s interruptions. After a while, she asked Piper how to spell her name and then she printed two images of the baby upon which she had typed the words; "Piper’s Baby Brother”. Piper has now come to terms with the idea of another brother and calls him by name. The boys were the next of the siblings to get the news. Christian gave us the response we expected; I told you so. Stefan took the news, as he does most things, with little display of emotion absorbing the news with a contemplative expression. He stated quite matter of a fact that he had thought it would be a girl. Later this same day, Bailey was at the soccer field for a game when she got the news. Cubby coaches her team and he also attends college. He had an exam, so I arrived at the game before him. Upon his request, I did not divulge any information. It was hard, because not only did Bailey ask me a couple of times in different ways, others at the game were also curious. The game was in play when Cubby arrived. At half time, Bailey wanted him to tell her. However, he waited until the end of the game so that he could show her the sonogram images as he shared the news with her. She was delighted. She, like Christian, had predicted a boy.

Sunnyside Up

I am sitting here tonight wearing a pair of roomy, extra large, bright yellow smiley face boxers that Cubby got at a soccer game. Ironically, only months ago, I had jokes with him and Bailey about the boxers fitting a few people at once. Now, I am wearing them while thinking about my waistline. My waist has grown about 11 1/2 inches and is still growing strong. I can truthfully say that they are quite comfortable. The string is drawn and I am wondering how long it will be before I might have to let it out some more. I am contemplating how much longer they will fit and how many places I might get away with wearing them. You know boxers aren't quite like blazers or a nice denim jacket...they just don't have the same effect, do they?

Lingerie aside, Cubby assures you all that he will have something to post other than our baby's gender identifying sonogram in the near future. He is quite the busy man...being a full-time father, student, employee, soccer coach, and soccer referee and my all time favorite honey-do takes up quite a bit of his time.

OH BOY!!!

Surreal Moments

We are proud to announce that our baby is absolutely perfect; all things are as they should be. We are planning to post the gender once we have contacted our families and have shared the news with them.

The BIG Day

Today's the day! We're off to see the sonogram and hopefully get a peak at the baby's gender. I have to say that I have had mixed emotions about it for the last couple of days. I'm excited to find out, but at the same time I'm going to miss the anticipation. I'm also really excited about getting to see the baby again. There has been a lot of activity in the last few days. I'm getting to feel some of the movement really easily. Jennifer reports that the baby seems really interested in music and is also quite the soccer fan, but doesn't care much for pizza. I can't imagine that! Of course, how good could second hand pizza be? Anyway, tune in later and we'll give a recon report. --Cubby.

What's Going On In There?

I wish we had some exciting news to post today, but it seems we're in a lull. As you know, the previously scheduled sonogram was cancelled and rescheduled for Tuesday, October 5th. We're sure anxious to see the baby again. We tried to listen in again today, but the baby didn't have anything to say. The picture is Piper trying to zero in on the baby with the listener. It was pretty funny to watch. Jennifer reports feeling more movement with most of the activity in the evening. Looks like we've got another "night owl" on our hands. Today makes 21 1/7 weeks, by our calculations, so we're half way there; although, were not quite "over the hump" yet. I'm having some "nesting" urges myself. I'm starting to turn a more serious hand to space preparations and provisioning. --Cubby

Our baby is 20 4/7 weeks today.

"At 20 weeks - The child can hear and recognize her [or his] mother's voice. The child sucks its thumb. The baby may jump in reaction to a loud noise. Though still small and fragile, the baby is growing rapidly and could possibly survive if born at this stage. Fingernails and fingerprints are present...."

Weighty Wait

While I did not get to see the baby at my last visit, I did get to take a nap during the wait. With a large family, this is not considered a negative; rather it is time to one's self to do nothing. I also got to hear the baby's heart, though I think the baby was ready to be left alone. He/she kicked the doppler, to which Dr. McDonald (how appropriately named he is for our family) responded with; "whoa"!

He really is a nice man. His wife must have trained him well. He always says you have gained only three pounds and that everything is wonderful. He doesn't even add that it seems to be a monthly trend or that my total weight gain at the half-way mark is 23lbs. Nor did he calculate that at a rate of 3lbs per month, a total weight gain of 38(lbs(+/-)will be the grand finale in February.

Six weeks just doesn't seem like enough time to get back into my work clothes. Well, there are never too many justifications to shop for the wardrobe! - Jen

Hurry up and wait!

The specialist rescheduled the ultrasound for October 5th.

Anticipatory Excitement!!!

The sonogram is now just two days away...

As I was turning in the other night and reflecting upon the day with Cubby, as we usually do, I realized that I had not thought about the baby's gender at all that day. As I pondered this realization, I became aware of how much I longed to see our baby's face, little fingers and toes. We both agree that, regardless of gender, we will be blessed and we will love the child for its uniqueness, as we do each of our children.

I am not intending to negate the fun that we have had with the gender guessing poll, wive's tales, and predictions. I am simply savoring a moment of shifted focus. So, please feel free to continue to submit comments to any of the postings that you find on our baby's blog and/or vote. - Jen

Baby Images

I found this really cool link today. It has still images, as well as movie images of babies at various stages of development. I giggled while watching the movie clip of the baby sticking out its tongue.

I am at 19 2/7 weeks today and counting down the days until our next sonogram. It will be nice to have sonogram images where our baby looks more like a baby and less like a tadpole. Hopefully, we will get to video this sonogram and add a clip of it to our blog. - Jen

(To visit the site, click on "baby images")

What were you thinking?

I first interpreted this to mean; “SHOULD” you all be having more children? You all already have four! But since I live by grace, I will focus on the direct question, rather than the implied.

Like a lot of new parents whether expecting a pregnancy or surprised by it, I spend moments in fear. The unknown is a very soul searching place to visit. Having four other children, only serves to punctuate the many questions that I have.
Thankfully, I have a wonderful, loving and supportive circle. My family and intimate friends have reminded me that children are a blessing. They have also encouraged me to look to the other children as a confirmation that even though we are imperfectly human, we have awesome children.
As I look at each of our children, I see more than our influence in their lives, I see who they are choosing to become guided by their life experiences. They have independent spirits and though they are each unique, they share the same basic qualities. They possess good character, strong moral standards and a drive to be the best person that they can be. Am I the perfect parent? NO! Are our children perfect? NO! However, they are my best glimpse into the future and I am amazed by and proud of what I see. They are my greatest contribution to society. Yes. They were meant to be.

18 3/7 Weeks Today!

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has been following our project. In the 18th week, the baby is only about 6 inches long, but he or she has been quite active today, particularly this evening. We're counting the days until the next "BIG" sonogram. We thought it would be terrific if you would share your "old wives tales" on how to tell if the baby is a boy or a girl. Please take a minute to post your comments by clicking "comments" the "post a comment". We would love to share everyone's pearls of wisdom.

Actual Baby Sounds

No kidding! These are actually sounds from the baby as recorded through the "Bebe Sounds" prenatal heart listener. (Just kidding with the previous clip which is actually humpback whales.) I really didn't think we would be able to hear the baby with this so soon. Taken at 17 4/7 weeks, Jen had to lie still and search for about 10 minutes before the baby would cooperate.

Baby ??? Sounds

We just received a Bebe Sounds fetal heart listener as a gift. It's not the caliber of a medical doppler, but it is loads of fun. Jennifer is 17 2/7 weeks now, so we played with it for a while. Does this sound like a baby to you? Please leave your comments.

Punctuality Tendencies?

I have always been able to relate to the white rabbit from
Alice in Wonderland
"I'm late, I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date...", though believe it or not, history records that I did arrive early for something ... and of course, Cub was right on time. As for the baby's siblings, one was early and the other three were late.

If you would like to comment as to whether you believe this trend of being late will continue, you may do so by clicking on the word "comments" located below this post. Thanks for playing.

Can you predict how big the baby will be?

Parents birth sizes:
Cub: 6lbs 9oz - 18 ¼ inches, Jen: 6lbs 8oz - 21 inches

On what day of the week will the baby be born?

Monday’s child is fair of face,
Tuesday’s child is full of grace,
Wednesday’s child is full of woe,
Thursday’s child has far to go,
Friday’s child is loving and giving,
Saturday’s child works hard for a living,
But, Sunday’s child is fair and wise and good and happy.

A great swimmer in the family

Last night, we watched the baby doing what looked like a graceful back stroke. My tummy rippled from left to right and back again. This is pretty impressive for 17 weeks. Cubby teased about having twins. I reminded him of the two sonograms that show only one beautiful baby. Will we have a graceful swimmer or is the baby already growing out of room? YIKES! I don't like that thought.

Fetal Development

We have been visiting this and similar web sites to satisfy our curiosity about our baby's development. It is wonderful to see actual pictures of human development and to have an idea of what our baby might look like at various points throughout the pregnancy. How do I feel today? ...

How do I feel today? Pregnant! I'm frequently tired. When things slow down, I feel slight movements from the baby.

On 8/14/04 Cubby found a web site that sold belly casting kits for pregnant women and convinced me to participate. My best advice, if you should try this at home, is that you apply plenty of vaseline prior to application or you could find yourself in a REALLY STICKY situation, literally. If you want to check out one the product sites see Your Birth Connection. com

This sonograms was taken 6/24/04 (7 weeks). Already a really big difference in size. You can also tell this is going to be a shy baby. Then next anticipated sonogram should be around 9/23/04 (20 weeks) Of course, that's the one that will generate the most interest because we'll be able to narrow the naming choices and stop calling the baby "the baby."  Posted by Hello

This is my belly on 7/21/04. I had already gained 14lbs at this point. I guess this will be a big baby. Cubby is proud of his little overachiever.  Posted by Hello

Okay. We have a lot to do to bring you up-to-date since the beginning of the project. Here is a photo of our first look at the new baby. This sonogram was taken on 6/17 (6 weeks) and shows the baby (then about the size of a paper clip) at about 1 o'clock inside the dark center circle.  Posted by Hello
